The Pendant and What It Really Means
A pendant is a hanging object that is generally attached to a necklace or an earring. During the Victorian time, the presence of pendant in a bracelet was slowly adapted to make it a dangling band around the wrist. The function of a pendant aside from being a body ornament is self identification or self affirmation in which the bearer can put his or her initials in it. It is also believed to protect the bearer from bad spirits mainly of religious beliefs.
The first known figure of a pendant is way back when an African man wore a necklace with a pendant made of bone. The pendant was not immediately embraced by the people until decades past and the existent of tooth pendant and other wild animal body parts were taken and used to ward off evil spirits.
Pendants can either be a simple piece of carved wood attached to a string, a piece of shell that symbolizes marriage and romanticism or the greatness of special gemstone or pearl locked and secured in a miniature cage of iron gold or silver. Only during the medieval period that people start to wear the gold cross pendant. This type of pendant has been regarded greatly as it can come with any of their simplest costumes.
In the wake of the Victorian period, pendants made of special gemstones are finally valued and considered as part of their fashion style. During this time, the use of gold and silver lockets have not ceased instead, they were combined with special beads and valuable gemstones to give beauty and elegance in it.
In ancient times, the pendant is just merely an accessory that is believed to protect the bearer from negative things. Today, the pendant existed in is used in various acknowledgement and fashion statements in sports, friendship, marriage and even birth.
Other pendants came in the shape of tears or snowflakes. These types of pedants were developed in the modern time and have not greatly symbolized beliefs but mainly as a fashion statement. Today, pendants come in different forms and design, and their colors vary in many unique designs. Gold, silver, bronze and copper are the just the few metals in which the pendant originated.
